Stevens County Release Chain
Stevens County is one of the Minnesota counties that does not operate a licensed jail. The Stevens County Sheriff's Office still books and processes people, keeps local records, and transports prisoners to court. Physical confinement, however, may occur at Douglas, Kandiyohi, Swift, or Yellow Medicine County Jail. Recent county payment packets document use of all four receivers. That fact controls how a release must be checked. Stevens holds the first layer of a Stevens County release record, while the receiving jail holds the physical admission, transfer, and departure entries.
Release is also broader than walking out of a jail. A person may leave on bond or recognizance, complete a county sentence, move to probation, enter Minnesota DOC custody, leave state prison on supervised release, or reach final discharge. A transfer ends custody at one building without ending custody as a whole. The exact event label matters. “No longer at Douglas” does not show whether the person returned home, moved to another contract jail, went to prison, or entered federal or immigration custody.
- Release
- A documented departure from a custodial agency, which may be to the community or another legal status.
- Transfer
- A move between agencies or facilities while custody continues.
- Discharge
- The responsible authority's end of the sentence or supervision jurisdiction shown in its record.
- Time served
- Satisfaction of the custodial part credited by the court or custodian, though other duties may remain.
Stevens County Release Types
The next record source follows from the disposition. Court release and a physical jail release may be close in time, but they are separate acts. A judge supplies legal authority. The receiving jail carries out the departure after its checks and processing. State-prison supervised release is part of an executed Minnesota sentence, while county probation comes from a court order and may never place the person in the DOC Public Viewer.
| Release event | What it means | Best next source |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or recognizance | Physical departure while the court case and release terms continue | MCRO register, receiving-jail release entry, Stevens records |
| Time served or dismissal | The custodial basis ended through sentence credit or court action | Court disposition and executed jail release log |
| Probation | Court-ordered community supervision | Sentencing order and responsible probation office |
| Supervised release or parole | Release from state prison while DOC jurisdiction continues | MN DOC Current Status, caseworker, and supervision record |
| Transfer or commitment | Departure from one site while custody continues elsewhere | Transport record and receiving authority |
| Expiration or final discharge | The listed sentence jurisdiction ends | DOC or court discharge record |
A name that drops off a current jail list has not, by that fact alone, been released to the community.
Stevens County Release Record Fields
No single online Stevens report combines the entire custody chain. A focused request should identify the person and ask for the data that connects local processing to the receiving jail and final disposition. Stevens may not keep each field in one report, so the request should seek maintained public data rather than demand that staff create a new summary. The receiving county should receive a separate request for its physical-custody entry.
| Field | What it can establish |
|---|---|
| Booked name and aliases | The identity used in Stevens and receiver records |
| Booking or incident number | The link to the originating event |
| Booking date and time | When local processing or receiver admission began |
| Arresting agency and charges | The authority and allegations recorded at intake |
| Receiving facility and ID | Where physical custody moved and how to find the matching jail file |
| Transfer date and destination | Whether a roster departure continued into another custody system |
| Release date, time, and basis | When custody ended at that agency and the recorded legal reason |
| Supervising agency | Whether probation or state supervision followed release |
A calculated outdate, scheduled release, Anticipated Release Date, and executed release are not interchangeable. Each describes a different stage. Preserve the source's wording and timestamp when comparing the layers.
Request Stevens County Release Records
Minnesota's Government Data Practices Act permits inspection and copies of public government data. Section 13.82, subdivision 2 is especially useful here because adult arrest data include whether and where an adult is held, the date and legal basis for a transfer, the receiving agency, and the date and legal basis for release. Active investigations and protected data can still affect other fields. Juvenile records follow a separate and much more restricted framework.
- Gather the full booked name, approximate booking date, court file or incident number, and any known receiver.
- Call the Stevens County Sheriff's Office at 320-208-6500 or visit 400 Colorado Avenue, Suite 401, Morris, MN 56267.
- Ask for public booking, transport, receiving-facility, transfer, and final release or disposition data. Request segregable public portions and a statutory basis for anything withheld.
- Ask for a cost estimate before copies. No fixed Stevens booking-release fee or guaranteed response period was published in the reviewed sources.
- Send a second request to the confirmed receiver for its admission, transfer, and release event. The two offices created different parts of the record.
Under Minnesota Statutes §13.03, inspection of public data generally carries no inspection fee. Permitted copy costs apply, and 100 or fewer black-and-white letter or legal pages are capped at 25 cents per page. The agency may take reasonable time to locate, review, and redact data. No universal number of response days applies.
The official Stevens report-request guidance shows the practical call or in-person route:
That page supports the local starting point, but the request should still name the release and transfer fields needed for this distributed custody chain.
Stevens Release Access Limits
Web display is not the same as agency retention. Stevens publishes no historical release feed, and live receiving-jail rosters are operational snapshots. An older release entry may still exist even after a name vanishes online. Retention follows each agency's approved schedule, not a single Stevens web-window rule. Ask the data authority whether the requested event is retained and in what form.
Minnesota chapter 609A can seal qualifying records from ordinary public access. Sealing does not mean every record was destroyed, and the order's terms control which agencies and records are affected. Some criminal-justice access can remain. An order is ordinarily stayed for 60 days and during an appeal, so the order date may not match the date a public system changes. A blank MCRO result may also stem from name variation, remote-access limits, a juvenile classification, or the wrong county. It cannot by itself prove expungement or release.
Note: Juvenile identities, photographs, and case records must not be handled through the adult release workflow.
Find Stevens County Released Inmates
The most reliable search moves from identity to custody location, then to legal disposition. It does not treat one missing name as the answer. This order also separates a Stevens county case from a state-prison or federal case before the wrong locator creates a false conclusion.
- Confirm the full name, approximate birth date, booking date, case number, or six-digit MNDOC ID.
- Ask Stevens Sheriff whether it processed the person and where the person was transported.
- Search Minnesota VINE by name or identifier. Read the named holding agency, status, and update time.
- Check the confirmed receiving jail's live roster only for present custody. Call for the release or transfer entry after the name drops off.
- Search Stevens court records for the bail order, sentence, dismissal, warrant, revocation, or disposition.
- Use MN DOC for a state commitment, BOP for federal custody, and ICE only for current immigration detention.
- Request the originating and receiving records when a certified or lasting historical answer is needed.
Roster disappearance, a VINE change, a scheduled date, a court order, or a parole grant should be reconciled with the executing agency.
The Stevens County Jail Releases: 24 Hours page applies this chain to same-day events when no county feed exists.
Stevens Released Inmate DOC Search
The Minnesota Public Viewer applies to adults committed to the Commissioner of Corrections who remain under DOC jurisdiction. It is not a Stevens booking database and does not cover all county probation cases. A profile can remain public after prison release when supervision continues, then leave the locator after final discharge. A no-result may mean a county-only case, alias, wrong ID, entry delay, or fully ended DOC jurisdiction.
| Search or profile field | How to read it |
|---|---|
| Name | First name, last name, or both; prefix matching may broaden results |
| MNDOC Offender ID | A complete six-digit identifier |
| Current Status | The live custody or community-supervision position under DOC |
| Anticipated Release Date | A forecast, not proof that release occurred |
| Expiration Date | The stated end of DOC jurisdiction, not always the prison exit date |
| Court file and county | Identity and case cross-checks |
The official search screen shows the two Minnesota query modes:
Compare birth date, aliases, offense county, court file, and ID before treating a result as the right Stevens County person.
Stevens Release Records in Court
Stevens County provides unusually clear court-search directions. Open Minnesota Court Records Online, choose trial-court access, accept the terms, select Stevens County, and use the Criminal/Traffic/Petty category. Searches can use case, defendant, citation, or attorney. Stevens case numbers use county prefix 75. The register may show bail, release conditions, jail credit, sentencing, dismissal, probation, a warrant, revocation, or satisfaction after the live roster no longer carries the name.
A docket entry explains legal authority, not necessarily the exact moment the receiver completed its release steps. A judge's order can precede transport, identity checks, holds review, and property return. The public court calendar is also not a release list. It omits confidential or non-remotely accessible matters even though its published entries update during business days.
The Stevens District Court instructions illustrate the local county selection and case-prefix path:
Use the register to explain the legal event, then compare it with the receiving jail's executed release or transfer entry.
Stevens Release Alerts and Locators
The Stevens Sheriff promotes Minnesota VINE and its 877-664-8463 telephone line. VINE can search participating county-jail and detention data and send phone, email, or text alerts when custody changes. This is useful when Stevens sends people to more than one receiver. Read the reporting holding agency and confirm a changed status with that jail. A scheduled release is not an executed release, and VINE does not replace a historical release record.
Minnesota VINE does not cover people in MN DOC prisons. State-prison notifications use DOC's separate Haven service, while the Public Viewer supplies live DOC status. Federal records require the Bureau of Prisons locator. “Released” or “Not in BOP custody” means the person left BOP custody, but another state, local, federal, or immigration authority may still hold the person. ICE's locator is mainly for current detention, not a historical release archive. No single one of these systems covers every Stevens County release.
For limited public predatory-offender subsets, Minnesota maintains separate registry and noncompliant-offender resources. Those tools do not cover all released people and do not prove the date of a jail departure.
Douglas Release Times for Stevens
When Stevens confirms Douglas County Jail as the receiver, its local release instructions become relevant. Douglas says normal release begins at 9:00 a.m. Processing does not occur during 7:00 to 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., or 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. A recognizance release after court averages about one hour there, though it may take longer. These are Douglas procedures, not a countywide Stevens schedule.
Pickup occurs on the west side between the jail and SunOpta, and the person exits Door #2128. Confirm that Douglas still holds the person before traveling. Kandiyohi, Swift, and Yellow Medicine can use different exits and timing. A court order does not make the Douglas processing blocks apply at another receiver.
The official Douglas release logistics show the exit and processing details:
Use those directions only after Stevens identifies Douglas as the person's physical jail.
Getting Home After Stevens Release
Release geography matters in a county with no licensed jail. A family may expect someone in Morris while the actual exit is in Alexandria, Willmar, Benson, Granite Falls, or another city. First learn the receiver, then ask for the release door and a realistic completion window. Stevens-area directories name Morris City Transit and Rainbow Rider, but no reviewed source promises pickup at a receiving jail. Call the transportation provider with the actual city and time before making plans.
Note: Do not direct a pickup to Morris until the receiving jail and release point are confirmed.
Yellow Medicine Release Fee Context
Yellow Medicine County publishes a $25 booking fee and a $25-per-day pay-to-stay amount. Those numbers describe that receiver's posted policy. They do not prove that every Stevens detainee owes the same amount or that a specific balance is valid. Ask Yellow Medicine for the individual account, the legal basis, and any payment directions. Stevens, Douglas, Kandiyohi, and Swift records should not be assigned those figures by analogy.
Fees also do not decide whether release occurred. The executed custody entry, court authority, and any transfer record answer that question. A bill may follow a past stay and should be kept separate from release status.
Stevens County Release Facilities
The Sheriff's Corrections Division is the primary local starting point, not a licensed jail. The four receiving jails are listed because county payment records show recent use, not because each takes every Stevens booking. Confirm placement first. Each facility page below explains the part of the release chain that office can verify.
- Stevens County Sheriff's Office / Corrections Division: originating booking, records, transport, and receiver identification.
- Douglas County Jail: present-custody roster, physical release or transfer record, and published exit logistics.
- Kandiyohi County Jail: timestamped current list with some calculated outdates, followed by a request for executed departure data.
- Swift County Jail: receiver-specific custody and release information after Stevens confirms placement.
- Yellow Medicine County Jail: jail and VINE channels for custody changes and scheduled-release information.
A juvenile-center payment is not an adult lookup route. Juvenile access rules differ, so adult search and photo instructions must not be applied to a child.
